AI Governance: Why rules are just the start and personal responsibility matters.
Over the past few months, a lot has happened with Artificial Intelligence, not just technologically but also politically and socially. Around the world, governments, international organizations, and companies are working on rules to make sure AI is used in a way that is responsible, transparent, and centered on people.
A major example of this is the EU Artificial Intelligence Act. It is the first comprehensive legal framework of its kind, and it focuses specifically on regulation, safety, and managing risks. The AI Act defines which AI systems must follow strict rules and which principles must be met to protect basic rights and safety.
In addition, there are international guidelines like the OECD AI Principles, which were introduced in 2019 and updated in 2024. These principles serve as a global guide for using AI in a trustworthy and human-centered way, aiming to balance innovation with social values. More than 70 countries have launched initiatives based on these principles.
Beyond these legal frameworks, there are international discussions on how to make AI safe, fair, and responsible. Through agreements and conferences, countries are working on shared standards and looking for ways to reduce risks without blocking innovation.
All these political initiatives show that governance is no longer just an abstract idea; it is a global topic with real momentum. The direction is shaped not only by technical rules but also by values like transparency, accountability, and the protection of human dignity.
What interests me most is not just how countries and institutions regulate AI, but how companies and individual users handle their responsibility in daily life. Regulations can set the boundaries, but they cannot replace the daily awareness of the people who work with AI and make decisions.
For example, the OECD principles clearly state that AI should be innovative, trustworthy, and focused on people. This means that every time we use AI, we have to think about how it reflects our own values and how it impacts real people.
In my daily work, I notice that the more I integrate AI into my processes, the more important my role becomes. I am the one who has to reflect, check, and think things through. It is not enough to just set up a system and trust that it will "work correctly." Technology does not run itself. It needs guidance, oversight, and conscious management, not just at the political level, but in every team, every process, and every area of responsibility.
This highlights a key point: regulation provides the framework, but responsibility comes from how we behave during daily use. A well-designed system alone does not guarantee trustworthy use. For that, we need people who understand the rules, apply them flexibly, and think ahead within their own context.
For me, AI governance is not an abstract term from politics and legal texts. It is a practical, daily commitment: using technology in a way that respects human values, creates clear responsibilities, and puts people first.
And that is exactly what creates a real impact, not just on paper, but in our actual daily work.
